This unit in part discussed phonetics and the use of intonation in the English language. Suggested approaches for teaching English intonation were provided. The significance of stressing individual words in a sentence was discussed as well as stressing of syllables within words. Again, strategies to teach these were given. Also, the Phonemic alphabet was introduced and explained. It was very useful to work through practical application of the alphabet so as to show students how to use it in their studies. It was useful to be exposed to common joining of words that occur in English, plus learn about where in the mouth various sounds are formed. The later will no doubt be useful when helping students to clarify or execute correct pronunciation of words.
