Speaking and writing are important because they are the main avenues of communication, and an English teacher must create motivation for students to communicate. Speaking activities are characterized by their focus upon accuracy or fluency, which share equal importance. Writing is a skill that is often neglected in the classroom because many teachers wish to avoid too much quiet time. When teaching writing one must pay attention to spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and give special emphasis to handwriting if students' native language possesses a different alphabet. Productive skills can also be emphasized in the classroom through games which encourages more student participation.
