In this unit I learned different techniques about how to teach vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions. When selecting vocabulary there are many factors to consider, for example how similar is the chosen word to the student's own language? And is the word similar to other English words the students already know? Some of the techniques for teaching vocabulary include having students bring in objects from home, loved ones, favourite toy or pictures of their home and have them talk about their chosen object in front of the whole class. Structure was also covered in this unit, with the three key components of a class being engage, study and activate. The successful combination of these three factors are critical to the success of an ESL class.
