This chapter provided a detailed analysis of what reading and listening skills can entail. While both are equally important, it is easier for learners to experience difficulty with listening because the language isn’t ‘captured’ and they have to deduce meaning very quickly after only listening to it once. I also learnt that when teaching these receptive skills, generating interest regarding the topic discussed is very important. Selection of texts is also very important, as authentic texts and/or non-authentic texts can both help develop a student’s receptive skills when adequately used. Similarly, teachers also need to ensure that they discuss a variety of topics in class to cater to the interests and language levels of all their students.
