Through my experience in teaching ESL, finding and implementing the use of a textbook in the classroom has been very difficult. I appreciate how the lesson focuses on supplementing course textbooks with authentic and created material because I saw great benefit to using these in the classroom. It is very difficult to keep students focused on only one book during the course of a year. It is always helpful to use the textbook as a guide to what topics and grammar to teach but it can become a dreary task to hold fast to everything in the text book. I believe that having a textbook gives structure to the student and an authority on the language besides the teacher but if it is not supplemented with creatives games and activities ESL can become very dry and tedious.
