We, teachers, must be careful to help and support students patiently with this issue because it is one that requires most attention from learners. The past forms, especially the simple past and the past continuous, are also very common to teach at the elementary to pre-intermediate stages (with the exception of the past perfect continuous - and perhaps, the past perfect) Thus, giving a relevance to this tense -which complexities must be mastered not only by students but also by teachers- must be at the core of the teaching scenario.
