This lesson highlighted good teachers and learners, with specific attention to the many roles a teacher plays and the types of learners he/she may encounter in the classroom. The manifestation of the roles a teacher may play was my main take away from Unit 1. One such example was in thinking about the teacher as a prompter. I learned that in prompting, the teacher must be careful to not take the initiative away from the student. Another example is the teacher as a participant. The teacher must be careful not to focus too much attention on his/herself or dominate the activity. The teacher manifesting these roles successfully embodies what the unit considers a “good teacher,†one who cares about teaching, but cares more about the learning of the students.
