This unit looks at the modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. The basic rules for modal auxiliary verbs are described in detail, with recommended teaching ideas for lesson plans to teach these. The main differences between the active and passive voice are described with emphasis on form and usage of passive voice, drawing awareness to the difficulties students may encounter when learning this aspect of English grammar. Teaching ideas are also described. Emphasis is given to the two types of relative clauses, defining and non-defining with examples of each. The three types of phrasal verbs are described. Since phrasal verbs are very difficult for students to understand, special advice to approach this grammar subject is provided.
