This unit covers how to effectively manage the classroom under a variety of circumstances. From eye contact and gestures to how students are grouped, there are many different ways in which the teacher can control the classroom. There is no one right or wrong answer to how to manage the classroom, as the circumstances of the classroom such as students' ages, nationalities, and personalities can all affect how to best run the class. The physical arrangement of the classroom itself can also lend itself to classroom management. For instance, a circle or horseshoe-shaped classroom can allow students to feel as though they are more part of the group, while orderly rows can help reduce discipline problems by allowing the teacher to maintain eye contact with all students.
