In new groups, students don't know each other, while in existing groups, they likely know and are comfortable with each other. As the teacher, you need to find out about the students and their needs/aspirations with English. You also need to find out the English level of the class members. You can do this via questionnaires/surveys, games, or a needs analysis. If students are of different levels, you can different materials, split the students into groups, or pair stronger students with weaker ones. In large classes, it may be beneficial to use worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition, and have group leaders. You should encourage students to use English and only respond to English. If the students are reluctant, use pairwork, controlled practice, or roleplay.
