The two productive skills are speaking and writing, as opposed to the passive skills of listening and reading. In speaking, generally speaking, a higher level of fluency is demanded. Speakers must be able to produce language, often on the spot, in such a way as to sustain conversation. However, strict accuracy in grammar is often not necessary to get one's point across. Writing, on the other hand, gives the students time to plan their statements. However, this type of planing may be cognitively more demanding than simple speech, and as such a solid grasp of grammar is requisite to the task. In addition, writing is often accompanied by different purposes and conventions than speech, such as a higher level of formality, correct punctuation and spelling, and penmanship.
