While the structures of all the types of tenses seem fairly simple, their application in reality can be fairly complicated, for example: \"I work\" can easily be identified as a sentence in present simple tense, but \"I often work with complicated machinery\" may take longer to identify as the same tense. The initial statement that it is vital that teachers have a sound understanding of these concepts, is very important. I think it would be nearly impossible to even teach students at a basic level if you did not grasp this well.
