As read in the opening text to this chapter, students of English view learning pronunciation as highly important. When analysing phonology, intonation, the level of stress in the words spoken and pronunciation are key to understanding how English words are spoken and understood when communicating.
Knowledge of each can be achieved by teaching techniques including identifying intonation patterns, for example high to low by humming or singing. The level of stress used when speaking helps establish context and often focuses on one word within a sentence. For example, 'he didn't touch the door' implies it was somebody else that touched the door. Using techniques such as gestures, choral work and stress marks can assist students as too can teaching sound joining and linked speech.
