This unit covers several conditionals as well as describing reported and directed speech patterns. These topics are complex and potentially challenging to teach as the “rules†about them are not as straightforward as rules regarding tenses and other grammatical points. The rules regarding conditionals are based almost entirely on whether an action or consequence is likely, unlikely, or completely hypothetical.
While the rules for reporting direct speech are more formulaic, the changing of verbs could be very confusing to an English language learner. When teaching how to report direct language it may be prudent to show students an incorrect example sentence and explain to them why it is incorrect and how the meaning is changed based on how you report the direct speech.
