In this unit i learned about phonology which is the study of the physical properties of sound. Learning to pronounce correctly is very important when learning a new language. If the teacher wishes to help students improve their pronunciation areas such as intonation, stress and rhythm should be focused on. Intonation is the variation in pitch and volume in a sentence. The normal pattern is rise/fall in which, the fall part indicates that the speaker has finished what he wanted to say. Another pattern is fall rise this indicates surprise and demand for a response. Stress is the strong part of the sentence and it shows what a speaker is trying to imply in a sentence. Different techniques such as stress marks, choral work, and contrastive stress can be used to improve on this area.
