This unit covers course materials.
It explains the difference between authentic and created materials, and the advantages and disadvantages of both, with authentic materials being more frequently useful for more advanced students.
The unit also covers the advantages and disadvantages of using course books. I learnt, in particular, that a good teacher needs to adapt the use of course books to the requirements of his/her students, for example:
- Supplementing with other information, or other material during the course of a lesson
- Omitting any lessons which are not useful for the students
- Replacing any material which is unsuitable for whatever reason (e.g. due to culture of students or because the material is out of date)
- Adapting the materials to the requirements of the group
