Unit 15 discusses the variety of ways to evaluate students at the beginning of a course, throughout the course and upon completion. At different stages of a course, tests are a good way to assess level and progress. A placement test will aid in choosing the correct level class or group for each student. Progress tests are used to gauge how much a student has learned or retained from the course. A diagnostic test is given at the beginning of the course to determine what the students already know and gives the teachers some direction in the preparation of lessons and materials. Practice tests are used to help prepare students for an external examination. There are a number of external examinations such as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC as well as a multitude of different Cambridge Assessments.
