This unit talked about the receptive skills of reading and listening and the two reasons for the skills. One reason is for a purpose such as listening to a news report. The other reason is for entertainment such as reading a novel. The unit also listed a set of specialist skills that a learner uses when reading or listening such as skimming, scanning, prediction, deducing and detailed information. I found these skills useful to know as I think they would help with activities in lessons. For instance, handing out newspaper headlines to have learners deduce what the article is about. Another one would be listening to the beginning of a news report and predicting what will happen next. I like that the unit also gave some teaching ideas such as \"jig-saw\" reading and \"jumbled texts.\"
