The productive skills unit covered a variety of topics including how to teach speaking and writing skills in English. The speaking sections cover the difference between accuracy and fluency as well as when to focus on each aspect. Accuracy is oftentimes paired with the study phase and fluency is oftentimes paired with the activate phase. I feel like this makes a lot of sense because it takes pressure off the student when they are trying to get the flow of a new language. The unit also covers writing and the difficulties of teaching writing to students. Sometimes writing is overlooked but this unit underscores the importance of handwriting, spelling, punctuation, etc. The unit gives examples of ESA lessons for both speaking and writing and ends with the concept of communicative games.
