Practically speaking, there are 12 tenses of verbs in English. Within the present tense, there are 4 different tenses: present simple, present perfect, present continuous, and present perfect continuous. Although these forms may be natural for native English speakers, those learning English as a second language may have difficulty learning to use these tenses as they will have to memorize the specific uses of each tenses, categorize each situation in to one of those common uses, and know how to conjugate the verbs to match both the subject and the time relevant to the sentence. Although there are some general guidelines for how this is done, there are many exceptions that must be memorized by those learning English (e.g. all of the exceptions to forming the past participle of a verb).
