Pronunciation depends on three main categories, stress, intonation, and phonetics, each of which can vary the meaning of words and phrases. Stress is which syllables and words are emphasized in a sentence, and changing which word is stressed can change the implied meaning of the sentence. Intonation involves the fluctuation of pitch in a sentence, and is mainly used to differentiate between questions, and let the listener know whether to respond or keep listening. Phonetics is the description of how different sounds are created, which depends on the placement of the tongue, lips, and whether the vocal cords are used. The International Phonetic Alphabet is useful for unambiguously referring to a specific sound, because individual English letters can vary greatly in their pronunciation.
