This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
this unit focused on the productive skills of writing and speaking. These skills are both necessary for learning an new language, but often writing will be pushed to the back burner because written English is so complicated. This unit gave examples of how to conduct speaking lessons based either on accuracy or fluency, and when they are appropriate. It then went on to cover writing, and touched on whether or not punctuation, penmanship and layout should garner correction. In my opinion with a beginning class, basic spelling and penmanship should be the primary focus for writing. Then as the class becomes more advanced throw grammar and layout their way and see how they do. To try to teach grammar or sentence structure when they still have a issues with vocabulary seems premature to me.
