In this unit the use of course materials such as a course book vs. teacher-created materials and authentic materials was discussed. Course books have many advantages but they are not always the best solution to tailor a class to the specific needs of the students. On top of this the coursebook might keep a teacher from becoming more creative and spicing up lessons more often by falling into the trap of always relying on the same coursebook syllabus and its preplanned lessons. As someone who has created metric tons of course materials for my own students I can confidently say that there is payoff in taking the time to create your own stuff, but in the beginning using or modeling after a coursebook is a good idea to give you a good sense of what works/doesn't and what is truly necessary.
