Whereas forms of present tense verbs might be easier to convey to students considering a teacher can emote or mime how actions unfold in real time, past tenses require the ability to discern specific times as actions completed or how they unfolded in a variety of contexts. At first, these actions aren't immediately easy to describe, but certain classroom activities can evoke the thought process within a student that requires usage of past simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous actions. My particular favorites include acting out a scene once, and asking students to retell what they remembered. Another good activity I think is to have student's describe their dreams from previous nights, which elicits a lot of unique and colorful verbs, original and creative to each student.
