This unit introduced conditional clauses that use an 'if' clause that must be satisfied before a main clause can occur. There are five main conditional forms, including zero, first, second, third and mixed conditional. Each of them has a different form, for example, first conditional is formed with the present simple and will (or another modal verb) and second conditional is formed with the past tense to talk about an impossible present or future. There are a variety of activities that can be used to teach conditionals, including split sentences, gap fills, moral dilemma questions and chain conditionals. This unit also discussed reported speech, which involves reporting what was said without quotation marks and requires a backshift to the past tense, as well as the change of some words.
