This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit discussed ways of managing the classroom. Interestingly enough, managing a classroom requires a high level of interpersonal skills and not skills of imposing one's will on the others or being a harsh disciplinarian. It is also fascinating to see how the approach to education has moved from teacher-as-dictator to teacher-as-facilitator.
It is interesting to visualize the classroom as a small community that works together towards a goal (win-win) rather than competitors that seek a win-lose result.
Much of the emphasis in this unit has been on student-student conversation: working together in groups, allowing and encouraging students to correct other students, encouraging them to question each other and share the results. In essence, it is using peer pressure in a positive sense.
