This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The focus of this unit was on pronunciation, and how to teach it in the classroom. Because this is an enormous topic, the unit text contained an abundance of information including some basic rules about stress and intonation, the anatomy of the human speech system, the vocabulary used to describe different kinds of sounds and where they are produced, the phonemic alphabet, and some ideas for teaching proper pronunciation to ESL learners.
I learned a lot about the specifics of English pronunciation, and how to describe sounds using the phonemic alphabet. Probably the most important thing that I realized, however, is that native English speakers learn all of this naturally, and without effort. For ESL students, it's an infinitely more difficult process, and the teacher must bear this in mind.
