This unit covers the receptive skills comprising of reading and listening in learning a language. Readers and listeners employ a number of specialist skills when reading or listening. Their expertise in these skills determine their level of understanding of the context. There are also potential problems that arises with listening and reading. To avoid some of the potential problems, teachers can help students by pre-teaching vocabulary at the study phase and select topics that are of interest to students to maximise student's engagement with the material.
The skills taught in this unit are relevant and practical in addressing the learning needs of the students. For example, things to note in selecting text/dialogue, ways to engage students and help remove obstacles in learning the language.
