Course texts can provide predictability and a successful track record to emulate in the creation of a course syllabus. The teacher may choose to omit, supplement or substitute material provided by the textbook. Appropriateness to the students' level of understanding, relevancy of content and attractiveness of the text as well as cost and availability are criteria to consider in the selection of the course book to be used in the class. Real life authentic material can be introduced into the syllabus to help maintain the interest and motivation of the students. In addition non authentic material may be created and introduced to the syllabus to augment material from the text to promote greater levels of understanding and provide material that may be more relevant or interesting to the students.
