This unit covers the basics of teaching productive skills (speaking and writing). Speaking and writing lessons need to teach both accuracy and fluency. Exercises geared towards accuracy use drilling and controlled language and emphasize correct language production while fluency exercises are more creative and focus on efficacy and flow. Both are necessary. Both speaking and writing lessons will be more effective if the teacher creates interest in the topic to motivate students and provides plenty of vocabulary review and structured group practice to ensure that students feel comfortable with the language principles before producing their own writing and conversations. This unit also includes several example lessons with creative/free speech/writing and ideas for using games to motivate students.
