This unit covered the receptive skills reading and listening, which are two of the four basic skills in any language. The remaining skills are speaking and writing. The two main reasons for reading and listening are for a purpose (it will help us achieve a goal) and for entertainment (we find it pleasurable). We use several different specialist skills when reading and listening; scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction from content. When selecting reading and listening materials for a class, it is important to use material that is somewhat challenging to the learner, but not so challenging that they are discouraged by their lack of knowledge of the language. It is also important to select material that interests the students so that they are encouraged to engage in the lesson.
