It struck me that teaching this type of material necessitates having students at a fairly advanced level. The passive voice often is confusing for native English speakers and remains a persistent problem in composition and writing courses. Especially when one starts using it, it can be hard to break the habit. Also, when teaching the slight and nuance variances of whether someone may or might be at the door, or if someone could or should do something, much depends of tone, facial expression etc. to accompany what is actually being said. All this requires a student to engage on a number of levels that would be easier if they possessed a relative ease with the language already. It seems illadvised to even discuss this with students who haven't achieved the penultimate or ultimate levels of fluency.
