Listening and reading comprehension, or receptive skills, are an important aspect of learning a new language. This unit points out the different types of receptive skills such as predictive, scanning, skimming, looking for detailed information, and deduction from context. The unit also covers some problems that may arise with students as well as how a teacher can help by covering difficult vocabulary before listening or reading so students will have a better chance of fully understanding a text (reading) or conversation (listening). I also find the unit helpful because it highlights the importance of text selection. It would be unwise to have beginner students read one of my favorite poems when the vocabulary and grammar is beyond their learning. The unit also provides a lesson for receptive skills.
