Teachers and learners have different roles in the classroom, and both of these roles need to be optimized in order to create the best English language learning environment. In order for a teacher to be effective, the teacher needs to be in control, as a leader rather than as a friend of the students. At different points, the teacher may need to play different roles -- as manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, or monitor. A good teacher knows from experience and intuition under what circumstances to play each given role. Furthermore, the classroom experience might also depend on students' age and/or language level. Culture also plays a role, and particularly for language education, cultural sensitivity is crucial for building trust between student and teacher.
