This unit outlined the various parts of speech and the subcategories within each part. These parts of speech are the building blocks of the English language, and, as a native English speaker, it is important to become more familiar with the rules which govern their usage before attempting to teach them to students whose first language is not English. While I was very familiar with the difference between nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs before completing this unit, I would not have been able to explain the finer points - such as the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs, or between prepositions and conjunctions. However, now that I've completed the unit, I feel more proficient in these grammatical details, and I hope that I will only improve in this area as I continue through the course.
