Teaching vocabulary to students depends on what level they are at. Selecting which words to teach needs to be appropriate to the students and to the tasks, teachable and on how frequently they will come across the words. How difficult the students find it depends on the similarity to their own first language and which words they know already in English. When teaching vocabulary, students need to know the meaning and usage of the words, where it goes in relation to other words and how it interacts with other words.
When teaching grammar, students also need to know the meaning and usage, but also the patterns and forms as well as the differences when spoken and written.
Language functions include invitations, refusals, agreements and suggestions. These lesson stress the need for activation of the language.
