When he comes home, we will happily welcome him with a cake.
Direct speech is when a statement or question is had in a conversation. And the reporting of a person's direct statement or question is hence, reported speech.
For example, in the following conversation:
Kenshiro: What were you doing last night?
Dimi: I went to a great party!
Kyoko: What did he say he did?
Kenshiro: Dimi said that went to a great party last night.
