In this unit I learnt about the two receptive skills, reading and listening and how they are just as important as the productive skills, speaking and writing. There are two broad reasons as to why you read listen, one if for entertainment purposes such as reading a book or listening to a musical and the other is when there is a distinct purpose involved such as reading an instruction manual or listening to a teacher giving you instructions on a task. I also learnt how to teach a receptive skills lesson using the ESA techniques. Choosing interesting topics that the students will engage in and teaching them any complex vocabulary in the topic of choice is important. Another important bit I learnt is that when teaching receptive skills you must first start with an example of the topic before eliciting others.
