This unit discussed the productive skills of speaking and writing. Two aspects of speaking skills are accuracy and fluency, both of which should be addressed in lessons. Accuracy is generally addressed with controlled and guided activities, while fluency is generally addressed with creative speaking activities. Suggestions for techniques to encourage students to speak were presented, along with the outline of an example Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) lesson plan for creative speaking, and guidelines for creative speaking activities. Next various aspects of writing skills were discussed and the outline of an example ESA lesson plan for creative writing was presented. Finally the use of games in the classroom was discussed, and several potential games listed. I found all of the examples and suggestions to be useful.
