This section reviewed receptive skills, more specifically, reading and listening. There are many different reasons people choose to read and listen but two reasons could be to gain knowledge for a task or for pleasure. These motives might even blend together. We use prediction, scanning, skimming, detail oriented learning, and deduction to read and listen. We are not usually aware of these skills while we are using them but they help to comprehend and quickly learn material. One problem when teaching receptive skills is a lack of vocabulary that many new english learns have. This can be aided by pre-teaching vocabulary in order students to recognize words and gain confidence in their skills. Non-authentic texts also aid in confidence building because it caters to the student's vocabulary and skill level.
