I had never considered that course books may not be available within a teaching position. I've learned through this unit that using a combination or course books, created materials, and authentic materials would provide the most well rounded and student based lessons for the class. I understand that authentic materials may be more hard to come by for the beginning student; however, I think it would be great to find appropriate real world English samples even at that level. There are many potential positives and potential pitfalls to using course books, but overall, I think that having those books as well as a willingness to adapt and supplement is the best possible combination for a teacher, especially for one who is just beginning.
