The motivation behind reading or listening to a text impacts the way a reader or listener will go about their activity. He/ she might be looking for in-depth information, in which case they are doing a detailed search for information, or they might be looking for the general gist, in which case they would skim the text. In a classroom where more advanced language is introduced to students of a lower level, it is of benefit to the students to go over the most import vocab in the new text and leave students to handle the rest, thus building their confidence for future situations where they might not know every single word being spoken/ read.
