This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit focuses on how to teach pronunciation and phonology. It teaches intonation and it's various patterns such as rise/fall intonation, where the falling intonation indicates that you have finished what you wanted to say. It also teaches where to put stress on different words and syllables and how that changes meaning. For example /SHE didn't mean to hit the tree/ means somebody else meant to do it, where as, /she didn't mean to hit the TREE/ means she meant to hit something else. It further teaches techniques for indicating and teaching stress from gesture to stress marks. I learnt that there are four major ways to join sounds namely linking, sound dropping, sound changing and extra lettering. I also learnt how to read phonemic symbols and the different places and manners of articulation. I further learnt that peer dictation, modelling your own mouth, visuals, tongue twisters and phonemes are effective techniques for teaching the pronunciation of individual sounds. The unit also covered when to teach pronunciation whether it be a whole lesson, lesson slots or as and when required.
