As a student, I always assumed that the teacher knew what to do and had come prepared for class. On this count, I was correct but I probably didn?t realise how much time and effort went behind the planning of the lesson. Indeed, looking back I think my teachers excelled in another aspect of teaching: time management. These skills do not come automatically and I suppose I will need practice and study to master them. I learnt english as a first language and mandarin chinese as a second and we certainly did not have the fun activities described in these pages; it was mainly rote learning and drills which may have, in retrospect, made sense because the grammatical structures of mandarin are not difficult.
