This unit describes course design. Before the course begins or at least during the first encounter, it is recommended to provide level testing and a needs assessment. The level testing is used to determine the students' English proficiency, while the needs assessment looks for the situations in which the students need to use English (i.e. speaking with customers, providing presentations, or writing company memos and letters). The results of these assessments will help the teacher to group students with similar levels and English needs (if allowed by their employer) and will set priorities for syllabus development. The syllabus should allocate one lesson for introduction to the course and potentially a needs assessment, one lesson for a progress test (perhaps more lessons if the course duration is very long) and course evaluation, and one lesson for review or lessons that have taken longer than expected. The remaining classes should be dedicated to the priorities determined by the needs analysis.
