Receptive skills are part of the four language skills, reading, listening, writing and speaking. It is very important to always try and include all four skills while teaching. When using our receptive skills our reason and motive when are completely different from one another. There are two categories we can divide our reason and motivation, for purpose and for entertainment. Reading or listening for purpose help us achieve a particular aim or goal. Reading or listening for entertainment is for our own pleasure. However these two categories can overlap sometimes.
I have learnt that our pre-existing skills play a very important role when we teach receptive skills. Students? existing knowledge should always be understood and it is always important to pre-teach difficult vocabulary and carefully select a suitable text.
