This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Teachers in special situations have unique challenges. Each teacher will have to go through the first lesson with a new class. This sets the tone for what is to come, so it behooves a teacher to approach it thoughtfully. The class will either be an existing group, or a group unknown to each other. Rather than forcing grammar exercises or the course book on students right away, build rapport by playing games and getting them to speak up and learn about each other.
Large classes can be approached with more worksheets, pair and small group work so all students can participate.
Students at different levels can help one another, or the same work can be done, but modified to be more complex for more advanced students and simpler or slower for less advanced students.
Native language should be avoided. The more clear the instructor is, the less students will need to revert to their native tongue.
