SIMPLE PAST
The action happened (started and ended) in the past; there is no connection with the present.
PAST CONTINUOUS
1. The action (past continuous) was going on in the past when another action (simple past) happened. 2. The action was going on at a specific point of time in the past.
PAST PERFECT
The action (past perfect) happened and was completed before another past action (simple past) or before a specific point of time in the past.
PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
1. The action (past perfect continuous) lasted for some time before another action in the past happened (simple past). 2. The action lasted for some time before a specific point of time in the past.
