Modal auxiliary verbs are important to the structure of sentences in the English language as they give meaning to the speaker or writer's intent. They can be used to express varying degrees of formality, as well as to make polite requests, seek or grant permission, or to talk about past actions. Words such as might, must, and should can change the meaning of a sentence, so it is important that English language students learn the difference between the various auxiliary verbs and how they are used. Relative clauses are also challenging for English learners as they may or may not have information that is essential to the information being shared. Phrasal verbs are another tricky area, where students need to become familiar with multi-word verbs that have a completely different meaning than each of the singular words it contains. However, activate activities such as role play can help students to become familiar with these English language structures and strengthen their vocabulary over time.
