Teaching Pronunciation & Phonology was the most surprising unit so far. It might be because I have never used intonation, stress or phonetic script when I learned other languages (I speak four languages) or when I was teaching. Neither am I aware of any teacher at my school who used it in class, and I lived and worked in China for years. There they use pinyin (which is basically just the normal alphabet) to teach the sounds of Chinese characters. In general, our students simply picked up intonation and stress by listening to us, and they reproduced it just fine. At least I can now read phonetic script. The names of the different parts of a person's mouth I will probably never use, except if a student specifically asks for it, which will be a first.
